The panel concludes a two-part survey of Melville’s reading of the Civil War as viewed through his Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866) by discussing poems on Stonewall Jackson, the Surrender at Appomattox, and post-war America.
Beautifully done! Along with your great readings I really liked the apt allusions to wyrd, Caesar, the Normans, Napoleon. Many instructive points too on 19th century politics and events, the Mexican-American War for instance. I also appreciated your insights on different points of view and focus. Thanks so much for reading my comment on the previous episode, and for adding Melville’s two Stonewall poems to the mix here.
Maybe someday you will do a bunch of episodes on CLAREL.
