The panel considers the scholarly consensus that Marvell is poetically and politically ambiguous by reading “To His Coy Mistress”, “Clorinda and Damon”, “A Dialogue between the Soul and the Body”, and “An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell’s Return from Ireland”.

  1. Errata: I mistakenly identify the author of Andrew Marvell: The Chameleon as Nigel Saul (author of the equally estimable For Honour and Fame: Chivalry in England 1066-1500), but the correct author is of course Nigel Smith! My apologies for the error!

Thank you to Jordan S. Sly for catching this slip!
